How to improve the home learning environment?
As parents, we want our children to thrive and learn in their homes. Unfortunately, the home learning environment isn’t always conducive to learning. What can be done to change this?
Homeschooling has become a common educational option for families who want to stay at home with their children. The rise in popularity of homeschooling has also sparked greater interest from educators and researchers.
While some research suggests that homeschooled students perform poorly compared to public school students, other studies suggest that they perform better. Regardless of whether or not they are outperforming their peers in a classroom setting, there are ways to improve the home learning atmosphere.
Five Ways to the Home Learning Environment
1- Have a Specific Room for Learning
Some households might enjoy the luxury of having an office or separate space set aside for homework. But perhaps our homes don’t all have the same amount of space. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to make a space for your children.
Consider routines and consistency instead of adding more space. Both the coffee table in the living room and the kitchen table can be used as a learning space. The area will transform into a welcoming learning environment if your child uses it daily.
2- Offer unwavering affection, focus, and emotional support
A child’s sense of self and belonging is both one of their primary emotional needs and the first and most crucial component for them to be able to learn. Children’s emotional needs are met by parents who are devoted, reachable, present, and encouraging.
No child can truly thrive unless they feel valued and heard. When children feel safe and are part of a loving family, they are much more likely to be motivated to learn. The self-motivation needed to learn will be developed in children whose homes are happy.
3- Collect a range of books
Keep books readily available for your children to read! Children who grow up in book-filled homes perform better on tests are more imaginative, and more! More books are better!
Having a lot of books on your shelves inspires kids to discover new interests and read for enjoyment. Your kids will be delighted to enter a different world through books, whether you purchase new or used books.
4- Make a Visual of your Space
You must have noticed all the motivational signs and pictures that the teachers have posted throughout the classrooms. Positive reinforcement statements are used on these posters and photos to keep your child motivated!
Who is to say that they cannot have any in their home learning environment? Your child can create an imaginary world with the aid of a visual environment. Creativity is crucial. Consider creating wall art that kids will be eager to explore, such as maps of the world, animal posters, or anything else they might be curious about.
5- Establish a Daily Routine
Maintaining a healthy daily routine is one of the most important aspects of creating a positive learning environment. Children feel more secure and are better able to learn when they know what is expected of them and can anticipate how their day will go.
Routine gives the day structure, gives the child a sense of control, and prevents them from feeling lost, uncertain, or anxious. Additionally, when they have a routine, they behave better because they are more likely to accept it rather than expend energy trying to change it.
